Bits and pieces of my thirtysomething life

Know your Limits

October29

Busy busy busy. Everyone these days is busy. Over the years, our family has had it’s share of “busy-ness”.  Homeschool activities, committees, leadership trainings, meetings, ministry. And it took a toll on our family.

I think “busy-ness” is a tool that Satan uses in the church a lot these days. Keep those Christians busy enough, and they will be spinning around in so many directions, they won’t be effective at anything. And if all that causes some problems at home, then Satan is even happier.

You may not agree with me (and that’s OK, :) ) but I believe that a woman’s ministry is to her husband and family first and foremost. We are called to be keepers at home. Other things are secondary, and if they effect family life, need to be evaluated and perhaps eliminated.

I love this post at Heavenly Homemakers, and this quote especially-

Never, ever, EVER should I be so busy and caught up in doing “good things” for others and for the church that it wears me out and makes me grumpy at my own family.  Never.

Wow! I wish I would have heard those words ten years ago.

Be sure to read the rest of the post too, its a great one!

RECIPE: Taco Bake Casserole

October17

I went to a home sales party at a friend’s house this afternoon and they made a yummy and simple recipe that I fixed for dinner tonight.  It’s not overly nutritious, but it was yummy, :) It came together quickly and was surprisingly filling. I think it would be great to take to a potluck.
Here is my modified recipe:

1 lb ground beef – browned (seasoned with garlic, onion, S&P)

1 can refried beans

1 can Rotel

2 tbs taco seasoning (or one pkg)

Mix all of the above together to distribute seasonings.

In a 9×13 or similar casserole:

One can of crescent rolls, divided. Place the wider edge on the inside of the casserole, lining the sides, so the excess hangs over the side of the casserole, I used one on each end and two along each side.

Place meat mixture in casserole and evenly distribute. Bring the crescent roll pieces over and fold them on top of the mixture creating a crust. It’s ok if they don’t meet exactly, they will spread out a little bit. Top with 1/2 cup of cheddar cheese.

Bake at 350 for 30 mins. I served it with a dollop of sour cream, it was really tasty on a cool fall night like tonight.

Still using my soap nuts

October12

soap nuts for blog

In my first post about soap nuts I told you a lot about the nuts themselves and pricing information.

Now that I have been happily using them for a while, I thought I would share with you a review of sorts.

In the laundry, I have been very pleased. I am easily getting 7 washings out of a batch (five soap nuts). I only use cold water, so when I first use a batch I let it soak in a pint jar of  hot water for about five minutes, then I pour the water and the soap nuts in the washer.

After 7 or so washings, they go in a small pot on the stove with a little water and I make liquid concentrate. Warming the liquid to a boil and letting it steep all night seems to work well. I still have not had a soapnut that I would consider all used up, but after this, I really feel that I have gotten my money’s worth out them and I toss them out. (I do mash them as I am making the concentrate.)

My first batch of concentrate ( a weak one) worked really well for cleaning counters and mirrors, and hand washing dishes. I was not happy long term with the results in the dishwasher. I am hoping to try a stronger solution and see if I get good results, I’ll keep you posted.

Some things to remember:

Soapnuts are not a miracle detergent. Your laundry will not appear any cleaner than before, just clean. I still use an oxygen bleach like Oxiclean with each load.

Soapnuts are not a stain remover. Stains especially greasy ones, require pretreating.

Soapnuts have sweet smell to them, and the wet clothes from the washer will smell like them, but when dry, there is no scent, just clean and fresh.

There is very little sudsing with soapnuts, but if you take a peek in your washer while it is agitating, you will see it working.

A huge wish come true….

In honor of my ***SIX YEAR digi-versary, I have an announcement that has nothing to do with me, other than making me very happy, :D

CZ-web

The back story:

I was in a couple of chats (scrapbooking) featuring my VERY FAVORITE scrapbooker in the entire universe, Cathy Zielske, a few weeks ago, it was SO much fun!  Not only is she a wonderful designer, she is incredibly funny.
Several of us were encouraging her to take the leap to the dark side, and share her wonderful design style with the digital world. She hinted that she was really interested, and was learning Photoshop (being a graphic designer she works mostly in In Design.)
And a couple of weeks later, we have the joyous news the CZ has joined Designer Digitals and will be selling Photoshop templates!!!!
Can you tell I am just a little tiny bit excited?  Check out all the goodness right HERE.

*** I have been digitally scrapbooking since October 2003- WOOT!

Soap Nuts

September15

I have been reading quite a bit about soap nuts around the internet. Many of the blogs I read deal with natural, frugal living and that includes making home made cleaners. One of the most popular tips I have come across is making your own laundry detergent using borax, washing soda and a bar of soap. Now, there are concerns that the borax isn’t really healthy to be using either. You can read more about borax concerns here and here.

I have looked into three different companies that sell  soap nuts. One company is called Maggies, you can even buy them on Amazon.com. Here is a link so you can read the reviews, all excellent, except for a review of the company itself that is less tnha complimentary.

Laundry Tree is another site, and they offer a 100 percent money back guarantee. However, their prices are a little bit higher than this next company, who I have chosen to buy from-

NaturOil I have no experience with the company other than what I have read on blogs I frequent.I first read about them here at Passionate Homemaking. The writer has used other brands including the Maggie’s brand, but prefers the NaturOil, saying the are a better quality product. They sell a different variety, and the photos on their Amazon listing do look fresher than other photos I have seen. However In the interest of full disclosure, she is an affiliate for them. But she is also a godly woman and I trust her recommendation, and am happy to help her in her frugal journey.

It is my hope that I will be happy with the way that soap nuts clean, enough so that it can replace all my current cleaners. If it does, I will be buying in a very large quantity to help get my cost under 10 cents a load of laundry. Not as cheap as the home made laundry soap, but within an amount that my husband and I are comfortable with. Additionally, we use cold water to wash and I have read that can extend the life of the soap nut even further.

Here is the pricing break down:

4 oz (40 loads) 9.95

8 oz (80 loads) 12.75

16 oz (160 loads) 18.95

32 oz (320 loads) 28.95

48 oz (480 loads) 45.95

64 oz (640 loads) 58.95

Price comparison:

Tide 24 loads $10.15  (42 cents a load)

Purex 32 loads $7.00  (22 cents a load)

********If you are interested in trying a batch of these for yourself, please let me know, I am happy to share with you if you wouldn’t mind pitching in a dollar to pay for the cost of the muslin bag for your sample.*********

If you have read this far-THANK YOU, :) I am really passionate about finding things to use around my home that are not harmful to us or our pets, and using something of God’s creation I think is even more exciting.

Seeing

September3

Liz of Paislee Press, one of my favorite designers, said this on her blog today, and I could not agree more.

I love the ordinary, candid and everyday-ness of this photo because it captures the essence of us at the time – learning how to be a family of four. I didn’t realize how meaningful this photo was on the day it was taken. That’s the challenge of the ordinary and everyday occurrences. At least for me it is a challenge. Sometimes I need the passage of time to see.

LOVE IT!

My new MUST HAVE cookbook

September2

I don’t really use cookbooks anymore truthfully. Most of my recipes come from the good old Internet. But this is one cookbook I have been most eagerly anticipating and I am really hoping that someone I love will buy it for me. Maybe using Swagbucks.

Search & Win

(That was an unveiled hint to the love of my life, who thankfully reads my blog, and an ad to join Swagbucks all rolled into one. I couldn’t resist, on either count, sorry. :) )

Anyway, the cookbook in question is Pioneer Woman’s new cookbook, out in October ,and available for preorder  at Amazon.
I love PW and all of her recipes, she is an amazing cook and photographer as well. And she homeschools.

So check it out if you are so inclined. At the very least visit her site, I guarantee she will inspire you in some way when you stop by.

Time Tested Beauty Tips

September1

I saw this on Stacy Julian’s blog just now and loved it, especially the first part. Aparently it was one of Audrey Hepburn’s favorite poems.

For attractive lips,Speak words of kindness.

For lovely eyes,Seek out the good in people.

For a slim figure,Share your food with the hungry.

For beautiful hair,Let a child run his or her fingers through it once a day.

For poise,Walk with the knowledge that you’ll never walk alone.

People, even more than things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed and redeemed,Never throw out anybody.

Remember, if you ever need a helping hand,You’ll find one at the end of your arm.

As you grow older you will discover that you have two hands; One for helping yourself,The other for helping others.***Sam Levenson

Bananas- who knew?

August31

My friend Margie forwarded me this great email all about bananas. I love tips like these, and asked her permission to post it here. Thanks Margie!

After reading this, you’ll never look at a banana in the same way again.

Bananas contain three natural sugars – sucrose, fructose and glucose combined with fiber. A banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy.

Research has proven that just two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout. No wonder the banana is the number one fruit with the world’s leading athletes.

But energy isn’t the only way a banana can help us keep fit. It can also help overcome or prevent a substantial number of illnesses and conditions, making it a must to add to our daily diet.

Depression: According to a recent survey undertaken by MIND amongst people suffering from depression, many felt much better after eating a banana. This is because bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin, known to make you relax, improve your mood and generally make you feel happier.

PMS: Forget the pills – eat a banana. The vitamin B6 it contains regulates blood glucose levels, which can affect your mood.

Anemia : High in iron, bananas can stimulate the production of hemoglobin in the blood and so helps in cases of anemia.

Blood Pressure: This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium yet low in salt, making it perfect to beat blood pressure. So much so, the US Food and Drug Administration has just allowed the banana industry to make official claims for the fruit’s ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke.

Brain Power: 200 students at a Twickenham (Middlesex) school ( England ) were helped through their exams this year by eating bananas at breakfast, break, and lunch in a bid to boost their brain power. Research has shown that the potassium-packed fruit can assist learning by making pupils more alert.

Constipation: High in fiber, including bananas in the diet can help restore normal bowel action, helping to overcome the problem without resorting to laxatives.

Hangovers: One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is to make a banana milkshake, sweetened with honey. The banana calms the stomach and, with the help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while the milk soothes and re-hydrates your system.
Heartburn:
Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body, so if you suffer from heartburn, try eating a banana for soothing relief.

Morning Sickness:
Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep blood sugar levels up and avoid morning sickness

Mosquito bites: Before reaching for the insect bite cream, try rubbing the affected area with the inside of a banana skin. Many people find it amazingly successful at reducing swelling and irritation.

Nerves: Bananas are high in B vitamins that help calm the nervous system.

Overweight
and at work? Studies at the Institute of Psychology in Austria found pressure at work leads to gorging on comfort food like chocolate and chips.. Looking at 5,000 hospital patients, researchers found the most obese were more likely to be in high-pressure jobs. The report concluded that, to avoid panic-induced food cravings, we need to control our blood sugar levels by snacking on high carbohydrate foods every two hours to keep levels steady..

Ulcers: The banana is used as the dietary food against intestinal disorders because of its soft texture and smoothness. It is the only raw fruit that can be eaten without distress in over-chronicler cases. It also neutralizes over-acidity and reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach.

Temperature control: Many other cultures see bananas as a “cooling” fruit that can lower both the physical and emotional temperature of expectant mothers. In Thailand , for example, pregnant women eat bananas to ensure their baby is born with a cool temperature.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): Bananas can help SAD sufferers because they contain the natural mood enhancer tryptophan.

Smoking &Tobacco Use: Bananas can also help people trying to give up smoking. The B6, B12 they contain, as well as the potassium and magnesium found in them, help the body recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal.

Stress: Potassium is a vital mineral, which helps normalize the heartbeat, sends oxygen to the brain and regulates your body’s water balance.. When we are stressed, our metabolic rate rises, thereby reducing our potassium levels. These can be rebalanced with the help of a high-potassium banana snack.

Strokes: According to research in The New England Journal of Medicine, eating bananas as part of a regular diet can cut the risk of death by strokes by as much as 40%!

Warts: Those keen on natural alternatives swear that if you want to kill off a wart, take a piece of banana skin and place it on the wart, with the yellow side out. Carefully hold the skin in place with a plaster or surgical tape!

So, a banana really is a natural remedy for many ills. When you compare it to an apple, it has four times the protein, twice the carbohydrate, three times the phosphorus, five times the vitamin A and iron, and twice the other vitamins and minerals. It is also rich in potassium and is one of the best value foods around So maybe its time to change that well-known phrase so that we say, “A banana a day keeps the doctor away!”

OAMC tip

August31

I just ran across a great new (to me) blog called Once a Month Mom.I do not really “do” OAMC anymore, but I do incorporate some of its principles in my kitchen. One of those is browing all my ground beef at once.

Check out this post at OAMM for her fantastic tip that I plan to try next time I buy hamburger.
